Sultan of Kelantan

King of People’s Hearts

Sultan Muhammad V, Yang Di-Pertuan Agong ke-15

DURING the 2014 massive floods that affected more than 100,000 people in Kelantan, the Sultan of Kelantan, Tuanku Muhammad Faris Petra ibni Sultan Ismail Petra or Sultan Muhammad V, made an unannounced visit to Kuala Krai, which surprised the flood victims.
The Sultan used the name Sultan Muhammad V after he ascended the throne on sept 13, 2010.
At first, many of them did not recognise Tuanku Muhammad V, who went to a flood relief centre in his old four-wheel-drive truck with a bodyguard. The truck was a gift he received when he was the state’s Crown Prince some 20 years ago.
The publicity-shy state Ruler, now 47, went into the centre without any royal entourage and helped himself to a hot drink there.
At that time, no one among the hundreds of flood victims recognised him. One of the flood victims, who was standing next to Sultan Muhammad V, even commented that he had an uncanny resemblance to the Sultan of Kelantan.
The video of him saying that “the person holding a styrofoam cup looked like the state Ruler” went viral for several days.
This is one of the many attributes of a down-to-earth Sultan, who is popular among his subjects for being informal and devoid of protocol.
The youngest Sultan among his peers from eight other states, Sultan Muhammad V ascended the throne on Sept 13, 2010.
Born on Oct 6, 1969, Sultan Muhammad V became the 29th Sultan of Kelantan after his father suffered a heart ailment in 2010 and was incapacitated by illness, rendering him unfit to discharge his official duties.
Known to be an outdoor man, the Ruler also mooted the ever-popular “Walk With Me” since 2011 as a way to get closer to his subjects.
He received his early education at the Fatima Convent kindergarten, Kota Baru, (1974 to 1975) and completed his primary education at Sekolah Rendah Sultan Ismail 1 (1976 to 1981).
He studied at the Alice Smith School and Oakham School, Rutland, Britain, from 1983 to 1989 and graduated in diplomatic studies and Islamic studies at St Cross College, Oxford, and Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
The Sultan also studied diplomatic relations and business administration at the Huron University College in London, besides taking a diplomatic relations course at the Deutsche Stiftung Internationale Entwicklung in Berlin and European business administration at the European Business School in London.
Tuanku Muhammad V was made the Crown Prince in October 1985 and the Regent of Kelantan in 2009.
The Sultan was once married to Tengku Zubaidah Tengku Norudin, a member of the Pattani royal family. They later divorced and he has retained his single status since.
An avid reader and fan of four-wheel-drive vehicle expeditions, horse sports, bowling and archery, he also follows closely developments in and outside the country.
He has been going to the ground, meeting the rakyat, often quietly and away from the glare of the media.
Tuanku Muhammad V is also involved in many charitable organisations and has been appointed the Commander of the 506 Territorial Army Regiment with the rank of Brigadier General.
The Sultan was chosen as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Oct 13 at the 243rd (special) Conference of Rulers held at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
In a statement, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, said the appointment takes effect for five years from today.
Tuanku Muhammad V is a Ruler of the people and he is close to the hearts of the people in his state.
The eldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra, he often refers himself as “kita” when meeting with his people and loves going to the ground, including the interior areas and orang asli settlements in Gua Musang and Jeli.
Tuanku Muhammad V prefers to wear a jubah (robe) or baju Melayu, which is known in the state as baju gumbang with a kain pelikat (sarong cloth) and a white kopiah (skullcap) when visiting his subjects.
He has also nurtured spiritual values among the Muslim community in the state through the organising of Qiam With Me programmes, which are held every year since 2011 during the month of Ramadan.
The programme which starts at around 10pm after the Isyak and Terawih prayers, is followed by a religious lecture from a guest preacher, Qiamullail (Qiam means standing to denote prayer), before performing the Subuh prayers in congregation.
At the programme, Sultan Muhammad V will also present zakat donations to the asnaf (qualified group) recipients and the less fortunate.
Qiam With Me, along with Walkathon D’Raja Kelantan, is included in the state’s tourism calendar and both events serve as unique tourist attractions in Kelantan.
The Ruler always demonstrates sincere concern for the welfare of his subjects and extends assistance to the poor and those in need without seeking any media coverage. For this, media members in the state are grateful and will go out of their way to follow him whenever there is an opportunity.
Daulat Tuanku and hail to the new King as Tuanku Muhammad V takes over as Agong today.

KOTA BHARU, Dec 13 — After 37 years of waiting, the people of Kelantan finally see a monarch from their state, Sultan Muhammad V, reign as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The last monarch from Kelantan to be given the honour was Sultan Muhammad V’s grandfather, the late Sultan Yahya Petra ibni Sultan Ibrahim who served as the 6th Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1975 to 1979.
Effective today Sultan Muhammad V succeeds Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah for a five-year term.
Sultan Muhammad V is the appellation for Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra who ascended the throne as the 29th Sultan of Kelantan on 13 Sept, 2010. He was first installed as the Tengku Mahkota Kelantan on 6 Oct, 1985.

 Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah

A loving Ruler

A very 'Happy Birthday' to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who turns 71 (December 2016)
AS Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah turns 71, the people of Selangor wish him a very happy birthday as well as good health and longevity.

SELANGOR’S Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is celebrating his official birthday today, is noted for his ability to overlook protocol and formality when the need arises. Businessman Shekh Imaduddin Hakmi Shekh Yahya Hakmi recalls how he did not know who Sultan Sharafuddin was when he first encountered him.
Shekh Imaduddin had taken part in a motor rally in February 2015 and arrived at the Thai-Myanmar border where he met another group that was taking part in The Road to Mandalay rally.
Noting that Shekh Imaduddin’s car has a Malaysian registration number plate, a gentleman in the group asked him if he was from Malaysia.
“‘Yes, I am from Malaysia pakcik (uncle)’, I replied and went on chatting until a friend gave me a nudge,” said Shekh Imaduddin, who lives in Sg Petani, Kedah.
His friend told him it was the Sultan of Selangor that he had just addressed as pakcik.
“I quickly went up to Tuanku and profusely apologised and he graciously smiled and said it was all right,” said Shekh Imaduddin, adding he was still deeply embarrassed by the incident.
Shekh Imaduddin said Sultan Sharafuddin spent the next 15 to 20 minutes speaking with him and his friends about the rally.
“He was very easy-going and friendly. It was a very casual conversation and we were all at ease being around Tuanku,” he said.
Selangor Youth Community (also known as SAY) chief executive officer Izhar Moslim concurred and said he first met Sultan Sharafuddin in April this year with a few others to present to the Ruler their plans for the youth organisation.
“He was very relaxed and friendly, which put us at ease. What was more important was that he gave excellent input and added on to the ideas that we already had,” recalled Izhar.
Izhar added that the 71-year-old Sultan is very down to earth and loves to share his experiences.
However, the Ruler is also a strict person and always emphasises discipline and ethics, noted Izhar. And it was with a stern hand that the Sultan handled the state’s Mentri Besar crisis in 2014.
After ensuring a smooth transition of power from Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to the present Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Tuanku spoke his mind without mincing his words in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony of the state’s executive councillors after the crisis.
He held PKR’s infamous Kajang Move responsible for the start of the Mentri Besar crisis in Selangor and chided DAP and PKR for the turmoil created to oust Khalid.
Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed his concern over the state’s water issue and wants Selangor to ensure there was adequate clean water for domestic and industrial needs.
The Ruler also looks out for the vulnerable groups and in his speech during the opening of the state legislative assembly in 2009, asked for the land rights of the orang asli to be returned to them.
He said the orang asli community had undergone an erosion of identity and it was time for their rights to be reinstated with the resolution of their land problems.
Sultan Sharafuddin was born Tengku Idris Shah on Dec 24, 1945, at Istana Jemaah in Klang to the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah and his first wife Raja Saidatul Ihsan Tengku Badar Shah.

Sultan slams groups that sow discontent
KLANG: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has taken to task groups in the guise of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that are out to sow discontent.
In his royal address in conjunction with his 71st birthday’s investiture ceremony, Sultan Sharafuddin said these groups hid behind NGOs which tried to create communal strife by generating chaos that could threaten the nation’s stability.
“The actions of these unfavourable groups must be stopped in order to gain the people’s, tourists’ and foreign investors’ confidence,” said Sultan Sharafuddin yesterday.
The Ruler also said the development and prosperity enjoyed by Selangor would continue if leaders at all levels – be it political, community or religious – as well as the state’s civil servants were able to work together in honesty.
Sultan Sharafuddin said negative elements must be prevented from becoming cancerous among leaders and administrators or the prosperity achieved would be destroyed due to the lack of trustworthiness.
“Therefore, my advice to the state leaders and civil servants is for them to learn from history about governments that collapsed because of leaderships weak in character and weak in faith and practice as well as failure to curb graft from spreading,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Ruler also said he was worried disaster might strike Selangor if the good values in society continued to decline, especially among leaders who misused their power and position and were involved in misappropriation and graft.
“Graft will also create a negative implication towards the country’s leadership with their integrity, honesty and transparency being questioned. As a result, leaders will be perceived as not credible by the people,’’ he added.
Various titles and awards were given to 101 people. Sultan Sharafuddin’s consort Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, who both received the Darjah Kerabat Selangor Yang Amat Dihormati (DK), headed the list of recipients this year.
Archbishop of South-East Asia’s Anglican Church and Bishop of Kuching Reverend Bolly Lapok received the Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) which comes with the title Datuk.
This year’s investiture ceremony was extra special as it was the first time, after becoming the state’s Ruler, that Sultan Sharafuddin has a consort by his side.
It was also the first investiture after the Raja Muda’s official proclamation as Selangor’s crown prince.
